Avoid Neck Surgery

One of the best ways to avoid painful cervical spine condition and treatments such as neck spurs surgery is to take proper care of your neck! I know that you must be thinking this is a no-brainer, but people just don’t think about how they can do their activities with less stress and strain being placed on this region of the spine.

It is a well known fact that the majority of injuries to the human spine occur in the lumbar region of the back and because of this many people will often not think to protect the cervical area of the spine.

Listed below are some of the more common ailments that can affect your cervical spine.

Herniated disc
Your cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae and in between each pair of vertebrae is a disc. This disc is made up of a tough outer shell and a soft interior gelatinous type compound. When this disc ruptures or becomes herniated the inner substance squeezes out placing pressure on its surrounding nerve roots. Although as we age the disc will naturally start to break down, there are some preventative measures that you can take to try and prolong this. Avoid sharp twisting motions with your neck, eat healthy, exercise regularly and avoid smoking.

Bone Spurs
Most of the public will think of a bone spur and assume that because the word spur is present they are composed of rough jagged material. This is far from the truth of what a bone spur actually is. A bone spur is the enlargement of a normal bone structure that occurs over a long period of time. Often referred to as osteophytes they are smooth structures created through the pulling forces of muscle spasms. Your body uses muscle spasms as a protective mechanism to prevent further damage occurring from a number of causes.

The tendons of your body that hold your muscle to your bone and the ligaments which hold bone to bone can start to pull the bone from where it should be. This happens over a long period of time and through this a bone spur can be created. Because your bones will conform to any pressure being applied to them the growth and formation of bone spurs may sometimes impinge on a nerve causing painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms.

Severe and debilitating pain can be caused when a bone spur develops along the spinal column of your neck or back leading to nerve impingement. The pain caused can lead to restricted movement, pain that radiates down the arms (in the case of your neck) or legs (spurs in your low back), weakness in your extremities (depending on where the spur develops), numbness, and sometimes disability.

If you suffer from neck spurs and conservative treatment has failed you, you and your spine specialist may consider the possibility of bone spurs neck surgery to relieve the pressure being applied on the nerve roots. There a few different types of neck spurs surgery, along with some minimally invasive techniques that you can have preformed. The advantage to a minimally invasive surgery such as a foraminotomy is that you can have the procedure done and be on your way within a few hours.
