Bone Spur in the Neck

A bone spur in the neck or cervical spine is not a spur in the traditional sense, but more a smooth "bump" of bone. This growth is the body's response to excess pressure or friction from bone rubbing upon bone, which can be caused by the degeneration of cartilage in the vertebral column.

Symptoms of a Bone Spur in the Neck

While most bone spurs do not cause any symptoms, those that push upon a nerve root or the spinal cord can cause issues that are so severe they can keep a person from living a normal life. Symptoms of a bone spur in the neck will manifest themselves in the neck, upper back, and arms and will likely include one or more of the following:

  • Pain
  • Headaches
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Limited mobility
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle spasms

Treatments for a Bone Spur in the Neck

Depending on the severity and cause of a bone spur in the neck, a treatment regimen can include many methods. However, they nearly always begin with conservative techniques such as:

  • Rest
  • Exercise
  • Stretching
  • Spinal decompression therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Painkillers
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Spinal cortisone injections
