Neck Spur Pain Keeping You Down?

Neck Spur Pain Keeping You Down?

Living with neck spur pain can be quite a burden. With symptoms ranging from mildly inconvenient soreness to life-interrupting and debilitating pain, a little lump of bone can wreak a lot of havoc on the body—not to mention emotional well being.  Also known as osteophytes, these growths can be caused by a variety of conditions and sometimes seem like they come out of nowhere. The good news is that living with neck spur pain does not have to be a way of life thanks to a number of potential treatment options available.

Surprisingly, the name “neck spur” is really a bit of a misnomer. Rather than a nasty barb, a bone spur is actually usually no more than a growth of smooth bone tissue on the surface of one of the cervical vertebrae. It can be caused by something as simple as the normal aging process—along with the onset of osteoarthritis—or something more serious like traumatic injury or degenerative disc disease. Regardless of the source of the osteophyte, the neck spur actually only becomes problematic if it irritates soft tissue, another bone, or a nerve.

In addition to neck spur pain, a number of frustrating symptoms can be associated with a bone spur, including:

  • stiffness or chronic soreness in the neck
  • pain that seems to radiate along a nerve
  • unexpected muscle weakness
  • numbness or tingling that permeates into the arms, hands and fingers
  • and more

In most instances, treatment of these symptoms is handled conservatively, or non-surgically, with great success. Anti-inflammatory drugs, cortisone shots, low-impact exercises and strength training, and heat packs are all effective treatments. However, occasionally surgery may be required to provide pain relief should conservative treatments prove insufficient.

If you are suffering from neck spur pain, contact Laser Spine Institute to learn about our minimally invasive, outpatient endoscopic spine procedures that provide our patients with real relief. We are happy to schedule a consultation to answer all of your questions, and provide you with a free review of your MRI or CT scan.
