Bone Spur Surgery

A last resort for treatment, bone spur surgery is a method that is suitable only for the most severe cases of the condition. In fact, the vast majority of people suffering from the affliction will never need to consider surgery, since they will be able to manage the symptoms with conservative techniques such as:

  • Rest
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Spinal cortisone shots
  • Stretching
  • Physical therapy
  • Hot and cold compression therapy
  • Pain medication
  • Spinal decompression
  • Exercise

However, when these techniques to treat bone spurs have been tried and have failed to bring enough relief to allow the patient to live a fulfilling life, the doctor may put forward surgery as a final option. However, open back and neck surgery comes with significant risks, and further may not be available to patients of a certain age or who have certain health issues.

Minimally Invasive Bone Spur Surgery

An alternative to open bone spur surgery, minimally invasive procedures allow for treatment of bone spurs without the need to cut through muscle to reach the surgery site, without general anesthesia, and without a long hospital stay. There is also a lower chance of infection with endoscopic procedures. In fact, these procedures require an incision that's just a few centimeters long, and they are performed on an outpatient basis using IV sedation and local anesthesia. Patients are released just hours after the procedure and are free to return home or to a hotel room for recovery. Because of the reduced trauma to the body and use of local rather than general anesthesia, the risks to the patient are also significantly decreased, so the procedures are available to some people who do not qualify for open back or neck surgery.

To learn more about minimally invasive bone spur surgery, or any of your treatment options, contact Laser Spine Institute. We'll be happy to review your MRI or CT scan free of charge and discuss your treatment options with you, as well as let you know if you qualify for one of our endoscopic spine procedures.
